With today’s global environmental concerns, going green has become a priority for more and more people. Whether it’s recycling, using renewable resources, or being conscious of the industries you support as a consumer, there are many ways both big and small to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Another part of your life which can be made greener is how you choose to construct your home. Some home siding materials come from recycled or natural renewable sources or require less industrial processing than others. Consider one of these greener options when you’re refinishing your home.
1. Bricks
Bricks are highly energy efficient, keeping your home cool in summer and warm in the winter. They’re also made from natural and renewable materials, and their durability makes them long-lasting, which reduces future industry costs to replace them.
2. Stucco
Stucco, made from cement, lime, sand, and water, is another natural and renewable option for your home siding. It is usually made mostly, if not entirely, without chemicals, which additionally reduces chemical-related risks.
3. Rock
Rock sidings also can usually be constructed without using chemicals or synthetic finishing. Though stone is a nonrenewable resource, it can be locally sourced and requires very minimal industrial manufacturing.
4. Metal
Another locally sourced product is metal, which usually comes from recycled junk yard or scrap metal materials. Repurposed metal requires more industrial manufacturing than other green siding options, but the installation is often much easier and quicker.
5. Wood
Wood materials have several green benefits for home siding. Cedar wood is especially popular because of its makeup as a natural water and insect repellant. Wood is renewable and sustainable, but be sure to choose products that are certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council.
6. Fiber Cement
A final option for environmentally friendly siding is fiber cement, which can be manufactured to look like wood, traditional vinyl, and other materials. Fiber cement is made of natural, biodegradable, renewable, and locally sourced materials, and it produces few toxic chemicals when burned.
