Gutters are an important feature on your home to divert and channel rainwater away from the siding and promote the continued structural integrity of your house. Selecting the right gutters will keep your house safe from water damage, and there are several different materials to choose from.
Structural Options
In terms of structure and installation, homeowners usually have the option of choosing between seamless and sectional. Seamless gutters are custom made for your home out of one long piece of material and reduce the risk of damage due to leaks which occur at the seams of sectional gutters. Most materials are typically only available in sectional pieces, but aluminum is one material that is commonly offered as seamless.
Metal Gutters
Aluminum is one of the most popular material used, not only because of its availability in seamless varieties, but also because it is highly weather-resistant, lightweight, rust-proof, and cost-effective. Gutters are also now available in thicker grades of aluminum to increase their structural capacity.
Copper and stainless steel, on the other hand, are incredibly durable materials. They are also weather resistant and have high aesthetic appeal. Their cost, however, is usually several times higher than aluminum alternatives.
Gutters can also be made out of galvanized steel, which is quite structurally sound and affordable. The main important disadvantage of galvanized steel is that it rusts easily and will eventually give way to damage-causing leaks.
Vinyl Gutters
The primary material alternative to metal is vinyl. Vinyl is widely popular because of its comparatively low price and relative durability. Unlike some metals, vinyl will not corrode over time, but it can be prone to brittleness and cracking in cold weather. Installation can usually be completed quickly and easily, but vinyl gutters are not yet commonly available in seamless varieties.
