Sharon Lee Tegler: Small Business Association awards acknowledge Severna Park entrepreneurs

Hosted by The Greater Severna Park & Arnold Chamber of Commerce at Café Mezzanote and sponsored by the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, The Small Business Association Awards Luncheon was a happy affair.

Particularly delighted were the 2019 SBA nominees and award winners. Topping the list of state winners, for the Entrepreneurial Success of the Year Award, was Landmark Roofing located at 540 B&A Boulevard in Olde Severna Park.

Catching up with owners Artie Hendricks and Rob Calhan is easiest at the end of the day when their fleet of trucks returns from jobs throughout the county.

Hendricks, with degrees in architecture and construction management, is president of operations while partner Calhan, with a business degree, is president of sales. The partnership works well.

“Most contractors aren’t good on the business side and most business guys aren’t good on the contracting side,” Hendricks said. “But we’re a perfect mix which is why we’re able to offer quality materials and installation with reasonable pricing.”

Well respected in Anne Arundel and surrounding counties, Landmark is in demand not only for roof work but also for installing windows, siding and gutters. According to Calhan, 99% of their business is oriented toward replacement of roofing or siding for existing homes including older residences.

Because each county has different permits and rules, careful attention is paid when dealing with homes in historic areas like the city of Annapolis.

Both partners were thrilled Landmark won the award noting that it was nice to be acknowledged for their strong work ethic. They said Landmark’s employees felt equally honored. Like other local businesses, the company hires many community residents, contributing directly and indirectly to the economy.

Landmark Roofing does a lot of outreach. Once a year, the company offers a “Roof Give Away” to a local family in need.

“We ask the community for suggestions of a family down on their luck through illness, job loss or other problems and in desperate need of a roof replacement,” Hendricks said. “We replace their roof at no charge.”
